Species Description:
The perennial plant grows 1 to 2 feet in height; the flower is about 3/4" in diameter. Stems and leaves are usually hairy and erect. The leaves are 1 to 3 inches in length and are sometimes smooth on the underside.

Habitat Description: 
It grows on bluffs and in open grasslands along the coast. This species grows at an elevation of 15 to 50 ft (4 to 15 m) in open grassy areas, rocky slopes along the shore, and in rocky wooded areas. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds.

Native American Use:
  • The leaves of this plant were used in "pinole".

  • Tea was also made from the leaves.
