'Oppun towis?
My name is 'Unu which is Coast Miwok
for Mother. I am here to teach you about water safety. It is very important to always be safe around the water.
Did you know that about
6000 people drown each year in the
United States. About 5000 of those people would be alive today if they had worn one thing. Can you guess what that is?
If you guessed a LIFE JACKET you were right. Always wear a life jacket when you play near the water. There are many types but make sure you have one that fits YOU!
If you play in or near lakes or rivers Please follow these swimming tips:

SWIMMING TIPS
  • Wear a life jacket,
  • learn to swim. Ask you parents for swimming lessons.
  • Never go near the water without your parents or someone else who can swim.
  • Always swim in a safe area, a place that was made for swimming.
  • Never dive into any lake or river. Tree stumps, rocks and floating logs can cause serious injury or death.
  • Don't push or jump on others.
  • Never pretend that you are drowining.

Life Jackets
Life Ring
You can help a person who is drowing without risking your life. You can throw them anything that floats, such as a ball, ice chest, milk jug or inner tube
See if you can think of other items that will float in the water.
In a boating accident, stay with your
boat, climb onto it if you can, and wait for someone to help you.
